To engage fans and drive excitement around the premiere of Jumanji: The Next Level, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) tapped Los Angeles-based creative agency, Trigger – The Mixed Reality Agency®, to create a unique augmented reality (AR) experience on the web. Trigger, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) customer, has been leveraging Amazon Sumerian to build web AR experiences for a little over a year. In 2018, Trigger created a 3D immersive AR experience for the Sony release of Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, which enabled fans to capture photos with the superhero in their own physical environment. For Jumanji: The Next Level, Trigger tapped into Sumerian’s native chatbot integration, which leverages Amazon Lex, to create one of the first voice-activated AR experiences on the web at ExploreJumanji.com.

The exploreJumanji.com site allows fans to go deeper into the world of the beloved film franchise with the voice-activated command, “show me Jumanji” to reveal exclusive content. Visitors can drop in on three stunning worlds, with scenes ranging from a flock of ostriches chasing a dune buggy across a sandy desert, to a pack of screeching mandrills climbing across bridges and canyon walls, and an elusive castle perched high on a mountaintop. Saying “buy tickets” will open a new tab for the Jumanji ticketing page, bringing fans directly to the box office. Fans of the franchise will recognize many elements from the film, while having the opportunity to discover exclusive animation and videos recorded by the cast for the site.

Amazon Sumerian for AR Development

To provide audiences with an immersive look at the virtual worlds from the film, Trigger leveraged Amazon Sumerian to streamline AR development and remove complexities throughout production. Amazon Sumerian enables teams and professionals to quickly and easily create and run AR, VR, and 3D web applications, and integrate with other AWS services without specialized programming or 3D graphics expertise. In the case of this latest project, Sumerian made it possible for the small Trigger team to deliver the Jumanji AR experience in just eight weeks.

“Sumerian was the only tool that could have delivered on the complexity of the experience we were driving towards,” said Danny Parks, Senior Director of Technology Trigger Global. “One of our favorite features is the portability of the editor. As long as you’ve got a browser and an internet connection, you can work on your project from anywhere.”

Rather than focusing on infrastructure or needing to master platform-specific AR development, Amazon Sumerian enables creative teams to spend more time focusing on building experiences and creating stunning visual content. Thanks to the platform’s intuitive interface, stability, and power to run high-end graphics in an immersive environment, Amazon Sumerian provided the team with a quick and cost-effective path for creating this latest project.
